A Message on Christmas 2002

"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased!" (Luke 2:14)

Just like the first Christmas, the news of the birth of the Saviour comes once again in the midst of wars and rumours of war, of worsening poverty, escalating violence, and glaring injustice, not only in Asia but all over the world. It comes to us then as a refreshing reminder that God’s will is for peace, justice, and fullness of life for all. Hence, wars, poverty, violence and injustice are the will of those opposed to God’s Will.

During the past year here in Asia, we have seen signs of God’s will for peace being realized, albeit slowly and delicately. As leaders come to the table for peaceful negotiation; as conflicting parties agree to listen to each other; and as different religious groups begin to see each other as neighbours rather than enemies – we experience God’s will for peace.

Unfortunately, many of these attempts towards peace in various hot spots in Asia are made very precarious because of the powers-that-be which drum up their campaigns for war and their terrorism scare. We therefore need to guard against such forces and stay focused on God’s will for peace with justice.

God’s will is for peace – peace on earth – with those whom God is pleased. But God’s will is not only a gift that comes to us freely. It is also a task that is beckoning us to take part in.

May this Christmas season be a time for new commitment to receive God’s gift and participate in God’s task of peace-building in Asia.

Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. (Luke 2: 10)
