Solidarity Message 19 December 2002
Dear Bob Edgar and the NCCCUSA delegation of Christian leaders for peace: We in Asia are very pleased to hear of your plan to visit Iraq. This is a bold step you are undertaking, a strong statement of your witness to peace especially in these very troubled times. In the wake of so much propaganda for war and so much rumour about war, it is important for the rest of the world to know that there are alternative voices (voices of protest against injustice and war, and voices for peace and transformation) also in the United States. We know that alternative voices will be muffled and silenced by the powers-that-be. But we also trust that no one and nothing can in the end snuff out the still soft voice when it echoes the voice of God. We also know that actions such as solidarity visits, demonstrations and protests against war and injustice, and cries for peace and justice, can bring about criticism and even persecution. But these only reminds us of what it is like to follow the footsteps of the One who came to bring peace and fullness of life for all. The gift of Christ's peace is never easy, never cheap, never quick to come by. We thank God for new messengers of peace today. We thank God for you! Best wishes for the season and the coming new year. Sincerely, AHN Jae Woong
