Asia Sunday
was celebrated at Chi-nan Presbyterian Church on 12th
May. It was attended by members of the General Committee and members of the National
Council of Churches of Taiwan.
Three Bible studies led by Prof James Haire and one by Dr.
Huang Po Ho enriched the study sessions during the meeting.
Reports
of the General Secretary and Associate General Secretary
for Finance were received with appreciation. Reports of the program areas were also
received with appreciation.
The Committee decided to recommend to the General Assembly in 2005
the following two churches as full members of the CCA: (a) Diocese of the Armenian
Church of Australia and New Zealand and (b) The Salvation Army, Hong Kong and Macau
Command.
A GA Preparatory Committee has been formed composed of:
Anthony Row, Israel Paulraj, John Gilmore, Chuleepran Srisoontorn-Persons, Fuailelagi I.
Samoa Saleupolu. Wong Wai Ching is a coopted member while Ahn Jae Woong is an ex-officio
member. James Haire would be invited as resource person at the GA Preparatory Committee
meeting.
Invitations for hosting the next assembly will still be
solicited and welcomed. The National Council of Churches in Australia sent a written
invitation. Rev. William Lo, General Secretary of the PCT, announced that he would discuss
it with the officers of the PCT and NCCT. A third possibility is from the Church of Christ
in Thailand. The Preparatory Committee will decide on the venue, date, theme, Bible
studies, budget, organizational matters, etc. related to the GA.
The Executive Committee meeting will meet on 28 November-2
December 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Anthony Row, along with the member Council and
Churches will kindly meet all the local expenses, including board and lodging.
The Joint Program Area Committees will meet on 17-21 June 2003
but the place is still to be decided upon.
The next General Committee will be on 22-27 October 2003. The place
is still to be decided upon but Thailand is a good possibility.
The CCA and the Evangelical Fellowship of Asia will meet on 12-13
July 2002 in Chennai, India. The CCA will be represented by Anthony Row, Bishop Joseph Mar
Irenaeus and one staff member (to be decided).
The General Secretary asked to circulate the CCA Constitution and to
gather suggestions for changes or improvement. This is in preparation for the next GA.
It was decided that a staff evaluation manual would be drafted based
on the Personnel Manual and that this could be used in the next Executive Committee
meeting in Nov-Dec 2002. John Gilmore was asked to draft this staff evaluation manual.
The following staff received extension of their terms: Daniel
Thiagarajah (Jan 2003-December 2004); Rakesh Peter Dass (January 2003-December 2003); and
Hope Antone (February 2003-January 2005). The terms of two other staff (Josef Widyatmadja
and Corazon Tabing-Reyes) will be taken up in the Nov-Dec 2002 Executive Committee meeting
in Kuala Lumpur.
It was decided that any statements or open letters issued by the CCA
should include the names of the officers.
The officers were requested to look into the property of the CCA.
In order to build up a CCA Endowment Fund, a certain amount of money
each year should be set aside for such purpose.
The General Committee endorsed the NCC Korea's intention to host the
next General Assembly of the WCC in early 2006.
A session was carried out on WCC by Hubert van Beek and Mathews
George. Chang Yang-En shared an input on the history and struggles of the churches in
Taiwan.
The General Committee was hosted by the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan
which met all the local expenses (hotel, meals, airport transportation, etc.). The
NCC-Taiwan, Methodist Church and Anglican Church each hosted a dinner. Susan Chang, former
honorary treasurer of CCA from the PCT, hosted an exposure to the Garden of Mercy -- an
AIDS Foundation -- and a dinner.
The CCA presented a plaque to Rev. William Lo, General Secretary of
the PCT and chair of the NCCT, as a token of appreciation for their generous and warm
hospitality.
