A Call for Peace in These Uncertain Times

The National Council of Churches in the Philippines is one with all peoples of faith in praying for world peace amidst the US threat to attack Iraq.

We condemn in the strongest terms the war footing that the US government is taking against Iraq. The NCCP believes that this war is unjust and must be stopped. Now, as never before is the time to "turn swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks." (Isaiah 2:4).

The consequences of this looming war especially to civilians will be tragic: that civilians suffered and died when the US attacked Afghanistan is haunting our memory; our thousands of OFWs in the Middle East will be affected adversely; and its subsequent impact on the world’s economy especially in the price of oil will further impoverish our people.

The NCCP is also against US plans to use our country as a staging area or a refueling station for the planes and ships of mass destruction in its war of aggression. President Arroyo should desist from letting our country be a party to this madness. We are against compromising the sovereignty and security of this country in a war not of our own making and opposed by millions

This national day of prayer for peace is a time to show the world that there are peace-loving Filipinos who are one with millions of peoples around the globe against this unilateral action of the US government. United in prayer, we raise before God and this nation our desire for peace in this country and the world.
